Abstract

Elaeagnus pungens has rich medicinal value in folk medicine. The medicinal parts include fruits, leaves and roots. The leaves of Elaeagnus pungens were included in the 1977 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The medicinal parts are recorded in the Chinese herbal medicine manuals of 9 provinces and cities such as Jiangxi and Hunan. There are few modern studies on Elaeagnus pungens. Research on the roots and leaves has primarily focused on their chemical constituents, whereas studies on the fruit’s chemical composition are scarce and largely confined to food science applications. A large number of books were consulted to study its origin, growth distribution, name, nature, taste, meridian tropism, function, indications, processing, and chemical constituents of different parts. It has confirmed that the authentic source species is Elaeagnus pungens. The root of Elaeagnus pungens is sour, and a small part of it has bitter records and is neutral in nature. It mainly had the functions of promoting blood circulation and hemostasis, expelling wind and dampness, relieving cough and asthma, detoxification detoxifying and astringing sores. The leaves of Elaeagnus pungens taste sour, and there are also records of astringent or bitter or slightly bitter. The nature is neutral in nature, and very few records are slightly warm. It mainly has the effects of relieving cough and asthma, hemostasis, detoxification and so on. The fruit flavor of Elaeagnus pungens is mainly sour or sour and astringent, very few are sweet and sour, flat, and very few are cold. It mainly has the effects of convergence and antidiarrheal, invigorating spleen and digestion, relieving cough and asthma, hemostasis and so on. The review provides an herbal basis for the correct clinical medication and development.
